Jumpin’ February

This February has the distinction of containing an extra day, the 29th. So 2024 is a “leap year“. Leap refers to the extra distance covered by the year, but I wonder why use ‘leap’ and not, for example, ‘jump‘ (maybe too common), or ‘hop‘ (too short), or  ‘skip‘ (too childish) or even ‘bound‘ (maybe just a bit too dramatic…) I suppose if it was good enough for Neil Armstrong when he said “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” it’s good enough for 2024!
