So, have you started your Christmas shopping<\/strong> yet? Yes, before we know it the season of goodwill to all men and women <\/strong>\u2013 and the frenzy of gift-buying<\/strong> and giving<\/strong> \u2013 will be upon us, and that\u2019s why this month\u2019s Spread the Word<\/strong> will be looking at gifts <\/strong>and presents <\/strong>and those things that we soon might find under the tree<\/strong> or in our Christmas stockings.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What are hoping to get this year?\u00a0 A bottle of expensive perfume<\/strong> or cologne<\/strong>? A piece of jewelry <\/strong>of some kind, like a bracelet, necklace<\/strong> or ring<\/strong>? Maybe you prefer something more cerebral and would like to get a book, whether it\u2019s the latest bestseller<\/strong> or a classic novel. <\/strong>Books can be difficult things to choose, however, unless you have a very clear idea about the recipient<\/strong>\u2019s taste. I\u2019ve found this great chart <\/strong><\/a>in the New York Times<\/strong> that could help: So, You\u2019d Like to Buy Your Loved One a Book?<\/em> Here you\u2019ll be asked if the book is for a history buff (enthusiast)<\/strong>, a Francophile <\/strong>or someone into Dinosaurs.<\/strong>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s face it, there\u2019s a lot of pressure to get it right. No one wants their gift to be received by a less than sincere \u2018just what I\u2019ve always wanted!\u2019 <\/strong>It\u2019s good to think out of the box <\/strong>and, again, maybe the press can help: here\u2019s the from the Guardian<\/strong>, where you can search by type of gift, by price range or by type of person (including pets!). Here you can find such original presents as an intuitive navigation system for cyclists, <\/strong>a Minion Starter kit for new fish keepers<\/strong> and handmade soap for gardeners. <\/strong><\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not just the choice of gift that can pose a problem, but the quantity that you may have to buy. One answer to this is the ever-popular Secret Santa<\/strong> tradition, where the gift-giver<\/strong> is anonymous. And did you know that there are various online platforms like drawnames.com<\/strong><\/a> and easysanta.com<\/strong><\/a> for groups who can’t meet in person to draw the names from a hat <\/strong>or bowl<\/strong> before the Secret Santa event<\/strong>?<\/p>\n

A little more complicated \u2013 but definitely more fun \u2013 is White Elephant<\/strong>. The term white elephant\u00a0<\/strong>refers to an unwanted gift that cannot be easily disposed of. The term originates in the legend of the King of Siam, who apparently gave rare albino\u00a0elephants to courtiers\u00a0who had displeased him, so that they might be ruined by the animals’ maintenance costs! Anyway, back to the game: like Secret Santa<\/strong>, gift-givers are anonymous, but this time the receiver has the option of stealing others\u2019 opened presents.<\/p>\n

And each family or group can have their own individual traditions: in mine, while being able to open up the Christmas stockings<\/strong> on Christmas morning<\/strong> (actually a football sock<\/strong>, a satsuma <\/strong>always to be found within, among other things), we had to wait until after Christmas lunch<\/strong> to open the rest – something that required a lot of patience and self-control of a child! Of course now I think back fondly to this family custom, handing out the presents and all feeling content after turkey with all the trimmings (extra bits) <\/strong>and Christmas pudding<\/strong>!<\/p>\n
