What Should Your Teacher Be Doing for You?

For some people this might seem an easy question. A teacher should teach, just as a student should learn. However, as anybody who has been able to compare both good and bad learning experiences will know, the answer is not so easy to define.

In fact, we could argue that the assertion ‘a teacher should teach’ is questionable. ‘Learning’ is the key word in education and a teacher’s responsibility is to create the optimum conditions for that learning to take place. The following is a checklist of some of the things a language teacher should do in order for that to happen:

Organise well: your class should have a definite structure with stated objectives, a clear beginning and end and a logical flow in between. Your teacher should make you aware of medium-term or long-term objectives and review these with you periodically.

Have the right attitude: language learning requires fun, friendliness and energy to work well. The students have to contribute to this but the teacher needs to take the lead. A language class has to be enjoyable and a comfortable place to be and to experiment with the language! A good teacher is enthusiastic about language, communication and people, and this will motivate her students. Motivation is a crucial part of a teacher’s job, so if you don’t feel motivated, talk to her about it!

Communicate well: whether giving instructions, engaging in conversation or demonstrating communication skills a teacher must have the clarity and expressiveness of a good communicator. This includes explaining, or negotiating, the objectives of each class and your programme as a whole. She should also talk to you about the learning process itself: how you learn best, good practices for learning and self-study.

Know that using language is learning language: a language class must be communicative with a heavy emphasis on using the language. The use of solitary exercises on paper should be minimised with maximum opportunity to practice and learn by actually using the language, even at low levels.

Recognise the individual: a good teacher will take individual learner profiles into account and assign and adapt class activities accordingly. This teacher will know that different people learn best in different ways and be able to exploit this knowledge, even in a group class. Additionally, although different students may be treated differently according to their personality type and the way they learn best, all students should feel they are receiving sufficient individual attention from their teacher.

Be knowledgeable: a teacher is a consultant and should be able to resolve your doubts and questions. But if your question does not relate to the topic of the class, she may need some time to research – languages are large and complex things and it can be difficult to instantly remember everything!

Know when to be discreet: when you attend a language class it is your class and your time. A good teacher is not the ‘star’ of the class or a traditional authority figure but a facilitator who knows how to minimise her presence to give you room to express yourself and use the language.

Be flexible: a good, experienced teacher will have a plan B, be willing to change the direction of a class and admit when something isn’t working. She will adapt and change the course material you are using to suit you or your group’s needs.

Be a mentor and guide: a good teacher stays with you when you leave the classroom. She makes sure you know how to revise what you have studied in the class and knows about the abundant resources and tools available to engage with English in your free time. She uses class time to talk about these options with you and takes an interest in your contact with English outside class. She makes you want to explore English outside the classroom.

Give and receive feedback: praise for good language use, error-correction, sharing of good language, periodic suggestions about further study options. These are types of feedback a language teacher should give to her students to optimise their learning and show that she is really listening to them as individuals. A teacher should also be open to feedback from her students and their opinions about what they like doing in class and which areas they would like to focus on more. You should always feel that you have a say in the content and direction of your classes. A good teacher always wants to be even better, so your feedback is important to her.

Using resources: your teacher should make use of everything they can to improve your learning experience. This includes how to arrange tables and chairs, making appropriate use of whiteboards and projectors, if available, and using images or real objects to start conversation. Above all, your teacher should welcome and make good use of technology. Audiovisual material should play a part in your classes and your teacher should know about online resources and tools to advise you on how to continue your learning outside the classroom.

There is no such thing as a perfect language teacher. All of us have our strengths and weaknesses and it is difficult to tick all the boxes. However, from the point of view of the language student it is important and empowering to have a perspective on good practice from your teacher in order to be aware if you are being provided with the right conditions to be a successful language learner. If you do have those conditions, then you have the right platform to make some serious progress and the rest is up to you!
