In these more enlightened times the superstition has been largely absorbed into <strong>children&#8217;s games<\/strong> and <strong>popular culture<\/strong> as entertainment. However, many of the familiar tropes of Halloween: the <strong>pumpkin<\/strong>, <strong>apple-bobbing, fancy dress, trick-or-treating, witches, skulls<\/strong> and <strong>ghostly apparitions<\/strong> have very old or ancient origins and were once taken very seriously indeed!
