The idea that music brings people together, at least temporarily, as a kind of common language is well known. However, like any cultural force (football also comes to mind) music can produce negative effects if not handled well. The controversy around this year’s Eurovision song contest is an instance on a grand scale. A more modest example is when people disturb others by playing music loudly on their phones in public places. But, I suppose that if music is a language, it can be used to communicate both good and bad messages, and it very often depends on who is listening.
