The word ‘routine‘ has something of a negative connotation. People associate it with boredom and lack of spontaneity. However, as I have returned to my routine life after the upheaval of the Christmas break it has occurred to me that life would be truly hard without routines. Our routines help us organise ourselves, allow us to divert attention and energy to important matters while we do other things on ‘auto-pilot’. They also represent comfort in having that 11am cup of coffee or catching up on a Netflix series before bed. Spontaneity and excitement are fantastic, but they wouldn’t mean much without the firm, predictable base of routine.
